GST Advanced – Taxable Activities, Secondhand Goods, and Zero-rating of Land 2023 (webinar)

This webinar will consider some specific troublesome GST issues that are either subject to current IRD scrutiny or recent legislative change.

The webinar will focus on the following three issues:

1. Requirements for a taxable activity

Inland Revenue wrote to taxpayers regularly filing nil returns at the end of 2022 challenging them to affirm they had a taxable activity. What is required for a taxable activity and whether one exists has been the subject several recent Inland Revenue statements, and technical decisions. This webinar will examine what is required for a taxable activity to exist.

2. Claiming input tax when acquiring a secondhand good from an associated person

Claiming input tax on the purchase of secondhand goods acquired from associated persons has been a problematic area for some time. However, a recent legislative amendment makes input claims more readily available. This webinar will examine how this new legislative provision operates.

3. Compulsory zero-rating of land transactions

Land transactions between registered persons have been subject to compulsory zero-rating for near 12 years, but it is an area that still proves troublesome. It is also an area where getting it wrong can be costly both for the taxpayer and, potentially, their advisor. This webinar will look at some of the recent mistakes that taxpayers have made with the zero-rating rules, as well as some recent minor legislative tweaks to these rules.

Upon satisfactory completion of this activity you will be able to:

  • Better understand what is required for a person to be carrying on a taxable activity and be GST registered
  • Understand how the new associated person secondhand goods rule works
  • Be aware of some of the mistakes others have made when applying the compulsory zero-rating of land rules
